Hello, NetBeans 6.0!

Posted by Nicholas Blumhardt | August 01, 2007 14:01

Until yesterday I'd been doing all of my Ruby development in Aptana. It took all of ten minutes using the new NetBeans 6.0 beta for me to realise I had to switch.

NetBeans doesn't seem to be as feature-packed, nor as web-oriented as Aptana, but the organisation of the user interface makes up for that several times over.

I never thought I'd find an IDE for Ruby that came even close to the usability of Visual Studio for C#, but NetBeans is a serious contender. Little navigation conveniences like 'go to definition' really make or break an IDE, and NetBeans seems to recognise that with really smooth implementations. Refactoring support seems well-thought-out too.

Even though it is still in beta, the debugger feels more solid than Aptana's. Great stuff!
